Under Exalted’s Resources system, a character can only own what he can afford.
Consider this, however: Joe Character is a chimney sweep, and earns a meager wage performing a dirty job (Resources 1). One day he gets a letter informing him that his long lost uncle Bob has passed away, bequeathing him a small farm and a good horse. Joe’s fortunes have improved substantially, but since he has no skill as a farmer, he’s still stuck sweeping chimneys, and still only earns Resources 1.
To me, this sounds reasonable. Yet, there is no way to describe this with the Backgrounds system. A Storyteller could easily hand-wave this into being, but for those who would prefer a more reliable and structured rule, I propose the following Background:
Possessions
Each dot of this Background allows a character to begin play with an item or piece of property that he could otherwise not afford. The possession can be anything from a finely crafted sword to a riverboat to a slave, but the player must provide a plausible explanation of how his character came to own it.
If the item purchased requires continuous upkeep, such as a live animal, the character may also need sufficient Resources to support it.
As with all other things, the Storyteller is the final arbiter on whether possessions purchased with this Background are appropriate to the story.
