Tired of watching that uber villain die in 2 rounds, or watching your Dawn Cast go down to a mob of grannies with canes? Ping damage is a crutch that simply says that mobs win despite the amount of awesome your Exalt has.
One problem that has plagued me and my storyteller has been ping damage. During a fight there are 2 styles of fighting, a Combo that does lots of damage, or Flurry’s that depend on ping damage. If your opponents Soak is too high for your big attack, you simply switch to fast ping attacks.
After a few attempts to make enemies more of a challenge, or to offset the tendency of players to get stomped by weaker foes using ping, a system was developed that does not totally cripple ping attacks, and will force more intelligent and interesting combat.
When a character hits an opponent, they can only deal an amount of ping damage equal to the success over which they needed to hit. They are also limited to only dealing an amount of damage equal to their permanent Essence per Tick. So if a swarm of Essence 2 Spirits attack you each doing a Flurry of 4 attacks, the most ping damage each one could do per tick is 2 dice and not 8.
