Level 2 Artifact

Designed as a long flowing cloak that reaches one’s lower legs, this artifact was constructed with both offence and defence in mind. It was created by the First Age Lunar Odeilt Treeshade as a gift for his Solar bride, a master of various Celestial Martial Arts, and who possessed many unique techniques incorporating both the Mantis and Dreaming Pearl Courtesan Styles. Painstakingly crafted by soaking a piece of silk within a moonsilver bowl filled with the sap of a willow tree and the blood of a contortionist, giving the cloak a deep red sheen that seems to flow as it catches the light. It was then hung from the tallest tree in the Lunar’s homeland where he instructed a number of zephyrs to dance and cajole around the cloak for five days so it could learn the unpredictable nature of the wind. Once this was completed, Odeilt fixed an orichalcum hearthstone amulet that formed a clasp where the wearer would comfortably hang the artifact from her neck. To finish the cloak off, Odeilt attached five small orichalcum weights at its hem and shaped them in a spherical replica of the Unconquered Sun’s symbol.

When clasped around the neck, the elegantly capricious cloak provides cover much like a shield yet without any fatigue or mobility penalties and keeping the user’s hands free. When the target of either a ranged or hand-to-hand attack, the cloak provides a +2 bonus to either of the wearer’s DV by unpredictably moving and over-exaggerating every movement the Exalt makes as they defend themselves.

However, with a reflexive action the wielder can take hold of and unclasp the amulet and, in one smooth motion, snap the cloak off of their back. By doing so, the cloak bounds itself tight and is locked into place by both the amulet, which acts as the handle, and the five small hem weights. Elegantly capricious cloak now acts as a dire chain with the benefits of orichalcum, using the same stats given in Exalted, page 387 and is used in the same manner as the dangerous weapon. With a second reflexive action, the user can attach the cloak back around their neck to gain the defensive benefits where the cloak appears without any stains or creases whatsoever. This is because the original user was a socialite without peer and Odeilt wouldn’t have wished to have his spouse having to wear a garment that would appear dishevelled or bloodstained.

Elegantly capricious cloak requires a commitment of 4 motes to attune, has a single hearthstone setting and provides magical material bonuses for orichalcum.

Author’s Notes: Thanks for the comments, I’ve made some changes to make the description more interesting and changed the weapon aspect so it feels more natural (form a serpent-sting staff to dire chain) and made the artifact a one-off creation rather than a base item made from every 5MM.

I like the idea of the cloak, though it would seem more natural to me if it would change into a wrackstaff, rather than a serpent sting staff. I'm having trouble imagining the sections that make up serpent sting staff being made from the same tightly wrought cape.

On another note, I would have had the cape made of a mix of magical materials, or at least only made it available in starmetal, moonsilver, and possibly orichalcum. And I probably wouldn't give it material bonusses.

Dire chain works better.

I really do like this. It is a powerful, well-described, history-given artifact with defensive and offensive power, and is a good visual effect for the stunt-happy.
