Level 3 Artifact
An ancient leather-bound book inlaid with tiles of black jade and whorls of starmetal, the Codex is a scale map of all waters for five miles radius surrounding any given ship or small island (no more than ten miles in diameter).
Several copies of this book were created by a First Age Eclipse Caste trade prince for his Dragon-Blooded fleet captains, but most were destroyed during the chaos of the Usurpation. Almost certainly, a copy resides in the Library of Sperimin and it is very likely the prototype tome was buried with the Eclipse at his island nation home.
This artifact requires no commitment, but uses 4 motes of Essence per minute of study. The user must devote her entire attention to the book and can take no other actions in this time. For an additional mote per minute, the user can zoom the chart in to more carefully scrutinize a particular area.
It tracks and displays relative currents, weather patterns, trade routes and landmasses (though the latter two are currently very outdated and must be updated in the charts with a lost Terrestrial Circle Spell, included in the latter pages of the book).
