Level 5 Artifact
Gauntlets of Sublime Transubstantiation
These powerful First Age artisan’s tools appear as a pair of articulated gauntlets. The palms and fingertips feature adamant lenses, which are able to project a beam of essence capable of scanning, disintegrating, transmitting, and assembling matter. A thick, flexible cable leads from each gauntlet to a small back-mounted unit, which is in turn connected to a domed headset, with a crystalline display.
In addition to requiring a dedicated Hearthstone of level 3 or higher, it has an attunement cost of 5 motes. Actually using the artifact requires an activation costing 2 motes, which makes it available for the remainder of the scene. It has the following functions:
Functions as the equivalent of a master’s workshop (as defined in Oadenol’s Codex, pg. 28 ), and adds 2 automatic successes to any mundane Crafts roll.
With a successful Intelligence + Lore roll, allows the analysis of a mass. This takes about 15 minutes to do. The difficulty of the roll is determined by the complexity of the structure and composition of the material being analyzed- an object made from a single element, or a two-element alloy, is difficulty one, while any organic material is difficulty 5. Each threshold success allows for the analysis of 27 cubic feet of material. The “spectrometer” function of the beam can penetrate (10 – object’s lethal soak) feet of thickness of material. Use of this function grants two automatic successes on any roll to detect concealed features on any scanned object for each threshold success on the Int + Lore roll.
The beam may also be used to extract material, either in touch range or at a distance. At close range, the beam can remove (5 + the level of the dedicated hearthstone) points of each type of soak from one cubic foot of material per minute. When a volume of material no longer has any soak left, it has been fully extracted. The power can be used at range (see stats below), but the effective soak of targeted objects is two higher. The extraction beam can be used to selectively withdraw one component of an ore or other mixture. When used in this fashion, use the same rules as above. In this case, the volume of material actually extracted will be less than the amount of material the beam is applied to. If attempting to separate components from an alloy, such as turning steel into iron and coke, double the time required.
The extracted material can either be deposited in the backpack unit, which has a capacity of 2 cubic feet, or ejected from an output on the pack. This function does not work on living matter, nor on attuned Artifacts- although it does work on Magical Materials in their raw form.
The beam may also be used in reverse, to deposit material on a targeted surface. The material can be projected from reserves within the backpack unit. Alternately, one gauntlet can extract from a source while the other deposits it, which halves the rate at which the processes occur.
By spending an additional 2 motes, the user can supercharge the beam for a short time. This allows the user to use its extraction and deposition beam with a time interval measured in ticks, instead of minutes. Each activation is good for five ticks of use. Using the Gauntlets this way in combat offers several options. First, by making a successful Archery or Thrown attack at range, or Martial Arts within arm’s reach, the extraction beam can be applied against the armor of an opponent. Assume most normal armors have a volume of one cubic foot per point of fatigue penalty. For each cubic foot of armor that is extracted, reduce the overall soak bonus of the armor by the appropriate amount- ie, if an armor with a fatigue rating of 4 has one cubic foot removed, reduce its protection to 75% of normal. The same technique can be used against weapons. This requires a called shot against the weapon, but otherwise functions normally.
The deposition function, when supercharged for combat time, can be used to bind enemies by projecting previously extracted material onto joints and the like. Each cubic foot of material deposited on an enemy applies a -1 external penalty to all their appropriate rolls. They can, of course, break off deposited material with a successful roll.
Although the Speed of this “attack” is 5, the actually number of ticks the beam is successfully applied to the target is equal to the threshold successes on the attack roll, not to exceed 5.
The Gauntlets have the following stats in ranged combat:
Speed: 5 Accuracy: +2 Range: 150 (max) Rate: 1
For the purposes of hand-to-hand combat, they effectively function as piercing smashfists. They do not provide any Magical Material bonus.
