Hunting Spider Style is a Terrestrial Martial Arts Style. This style was created by Ker’ion with assistance from Jeppe and Obsidian Soul.
The Hunting Spider Style was created after the fall of the First Age by Kalen Treesinger, a Dragon-Blooded who Exalted at the edge of Creation, as a way for the people of his village to mimic the varied spiders of the Great Forests in their hunt for food. As the webs would take too much time to collect prey and require too much attention, he focused only on those who could hunt quickly and efficiently. After years spent meditating in the forest and watching the tree spiders hunt for food, he noticed that they seemed to have almost precognitive senses while hunting, as well as their toxic venoms that could paralyze or wither their prey with but a touch.
After his meditation, he brought his new techniques back home and began teaching all who would listen, opening their eyes to the flowing forces of life. Over the decades, the villagers began sending their young to him to learn the wonderful hunting techniques until he ended up teaching all who could properly hold a knife how to hunt. It has now become a tradition of the Village of the Spider that everyone of seven years go to the Treesinger for training in the ways of the hunt, as well as letters, numbers, and nature, since he refuses to teach anyone he believes has not been enlightened enough to understand the ways of the world around them. In game terms, he will not teach anyone without an Athletics of 2, Craft (Traps) of 2, Survival of 2, and the ability to read and write both Old Realm (which he learned from the local gods) and Wood Tongue.
Weapon:
Kama: A curved blade on the end of a short stick, the kama represents the fangs of the spider and is thus considered a Hunting Style Martial Arts form weapon.
Knife: The knife represents the fang of the spider and, as such, is considered a form weapon for this Style of Terrestrial Martial Arts. Kusari: The weighted fighting chain represents the extension of the spider’s web to entrap or stun their prey and is treated as a weapon of the Hunting Spider Style.
Kusari-gama: The kusari-gama is a kama with a three foot (or longer) chain attached to the base of the handle. The chain usually has a weight at the end. In their training, the students of the Style of the Hunting Spider are taught to see the kusari as the extension of the web used to entangle, paralyze, or stun their prey and the blade or the kama as their fang, representing the primary weapons of a spider in it’s hunt for prey. The kama side of this weapon is rarely thrown, due to it’s unweildy nature.
